E-bike maintenance in Berlin — what the workshop does and what it doesn't
In short: An e-bike should visit the workshop once a year — brakes, chain, gears and motor firmware are checked. Battery diagnostics and motor repairs are handled by the manufacturer; everything mechanical we do in Kreuzberg. A standard inspection costs roughly €89–€129.
E-bikes are everywhere in Berlin — from the cargo bike in Kreuzberg to the commuter pedelec heading into Mitte. One question we hear almost daily: "Can you service my e-bike?" The honest answer: Yes — for everything mechanical. No — for software, motor diagnostics and battery swaps. In this guide we explain exactly where the line runs, what we do to e-bikes every day and what belongs with the manufacturer.

Why does an e-bike wear out faster?
E-bikes often weigh 22 to 30 kilograms — add the rider plus sometimes a child or shopping. The motor assists with up to 85 Nm of torque. All of that pulls on every component:
- Chain: often lasts only 1,500–2,500 km instead of 4,000–6,000 km on a regular bike.
- Brake pads: wear twice as fast — higher weight plus higher speed.
- Tyres: puncture protection pays off. Schwalbe Marathon Plus or e-bike-specific tyres last longer.
- Cassette and derailleur: torque under load stresses every drivetrain — clean shifting extends service life.

For software and motor problems: manufacturer service. We're happy to name the right Bosch, Yamaha or Shimano Steps dealer in Berlin.
Software, battery, motor — why manufacturer only?
Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and co. only grant diagnostic software and battery access to certified dealers. There are safety and warranty reasons for that — and it's the right call. We'll tell you honestly when your problem belongs there, rather than touching it and risking the warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Do you repair every e-bike brand?
Mechanical components on e-bikes of every brand — Bosch, Shimano Steps, Yamaha, Brose, Fazua. For software, motor diagnostics and battery swaps we refer you to authorised brand dealers.
Do you do motor software updates?
No. Software updates require manufacturer diagnostic tools and licences that only authorised dealers have. But we're happy to tell you where in Berlin to find the right service.
How often should an e-bike be inspected?
At least once a year or every 2,000 to 3,000 kilometres. E-bikes wear faster than ordinary bikes because motor assistance and weight put more load on chain, brakes and tyres.
Why do e-bike chains last so briefly?
The motor pulls the chain with up to 85 Nm of torque. Without care an e-bike chain is often worn out after just 1,500 to 2,500 kilometres. Regular cleaning and oiling doubles its service life.
Is it worth repairing an older e-bike?
In most cases, yes. Mechanical wear parts (brakes, chain, tyres) are cheap to replace. It only gets expensive with motor or battery defects — we'll give you an honest opinion on whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Can I drop in without an appointment?
Yes — mornings between 9 am and 12 pm you can walk into Friesenstraße 24 without an appointment. For bigger jobs we recommend a quick phone call first.
