Bicycle theft in Berlin — how to really protect your bike
In short: Berlin is the bike-theft capital of Germany — what actually helps: a high-quality U-lock (Sold Secure Gold, €80–150), lock frame to a fixed object, get your frame coded and register the number. Bike insurance is a useful complement, but no substitute for a good lock.
Berlin records around 28,000 reported bicycle thefts every year — and the true number is significantly higher. In the Bergmannkiez, around Friesenstraße and by Görlitzer Park we see broken locks in the workshop every single week. The good news: with the right lock and the right locking technique you can dramatically reduce your risk.
Bike just stolen?
- File a report immediately at the Internetwache der Polizei Berlin (Berlin Police online station) — have the frame number ready.
- Notify your insurer within 48 hours or you risk losing the payout.
- Search the Berlin Facebook group "Geklaute Fahrräder Berlin" (Stolen Bikes Berlin) and Kleinanzeigen listings — many bikes reappear within 72 hours.
Which lock actually protects in Berlin?
Not every lock is suitable for a big city like Berlin. Professional thieves use angle grinders, bolt cutters and hydraulic car jacks. The only thing that works: hardened steel, smart construction — and enough time required that the thief moves on to the next bike.
| Lock type | Protection in Berlin | Price |
|---|---|---|
| U-lock / D-lock (hardened) | Very high — top recommendation | €80–150 |
| Folding lock (quality) | High — compact and practical for daily use | €90–160 |
| Chain lock (thick) | High — ideal as a second lock | €70–140 |
| Cable lock / coil lock | Very low — defeated in seconds | €15–40 |
| Cheap combination lock | Virtually none — only a token deterrent | €10–25 |
Our clear recommendation for Berlin: a quality U-lock through the rear wheel plus a chain lock through the front wheel. The combination forces a thief to use two different tools — taking long enough that he moves on to an easier target.
Specific lock recommendations
These are models we stock in the shop or recommend regularly in the workshop — all have proven themselves in real Berlin everyday use:
- Abus Granit X-Plus 540 — U-lock with security level 15, the Berlin classic. Approx. €110.
- Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit — arguably the safest U-lock on the market: heavy but virtually indestructible. Approx. €150.
- Hiplok Gold — chain lock you can wear around your waist. Practical for couriers and commuters. Approx. €100.
- Abus Bordo Granit XPlus 6500 — the best folding lock: compact and strong. Approx. €130.
The most common locking mistakes
We see them every day on Friesenstraße — and on every Berlin street. These five mistakes are the most frequent reasons people lose their bike:
- Only locking the front wheel — a quick-release skewer removes the rest in seconds.
- Attaching the lock to a thin sign, construction fence or wobbly pole.
- Lock resting on the ground — perfect for a hammer attack.
- Too much slack in the lock — gives a thief leverage for a jack or pry bar.
- Leaving the e-bike battery on the bike overnight — batteries are a targeted theft in Berlin.
How to lock your bike properly — step by step
- 1Choose a fixed anchor point
Use a solid, permanently installed bike rack or a thick lamp-post — never construction fences, thin signs or poles that can be lifted out.
- 2Secure the frame AND the rear wheel
Thread the U-lock through the rear tyre AND the main frame. This secures the frame and the most expensive wheel in one go.
- 3Leave as little slack as possible
The less play the lock has, the harder it is to attack with a car jack or crowbar.
- 4Keep the lock off the ground, keyhole facing down
Position the lock in the air, not resting on the ground — ground contact makes it easy to hammer open. Turn the keyhole downwards to make picking harder.
- 5Secure the front wheel and saddle separately
Use a second lock or chain lock through a quick-release front wheel. An expensive saddle? Take it with you or fit a Pitlock security skewer.
Frame number, coding and GPS trackers
Note down your frame number (usually stamped on the bottom bracket shell) and photograph your bike from several angles — ideally right after purchase. You'll need both for a Polizei-Anzeige (police report) and for your insurer. A Codierung (frame coding) from the ADFC Berlin (ADFC = Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club, the German Cyclists' Federation) makes your bike unattractive to fences and helps with identification after recovery. A Fahrradpass (bike passport / registration document) — issued by the ADFC or your insurer — records all the key details in one place. Hidden AirTags or dedicated bike trackers (e.g. PowUnity, Vodafone Curve) are not theft prevention, but they have helped many Berlin owners get their bikes back.
Do I need bicycle insurance in Berlin?
For a bike worth €800–1,000 or more, a separate bicycle insurance policy almost always makes sense. Common providers include Wertgarantie, Bikmo, Hepster and ERGO Fahrrad-Versicherung. Important: read the small print — many tariffs require a minimum lock security rating (often ART 2 or higher) and exclude e-bike batteries. More details in our guide to bicycle insurance.
Frequently asked questions about bike theft in Berlin
Which bicycle lock is truly secure in Berlin?
A high-quality hardened-steel U-lock (e.g. Abus Granit, Kryptonite New York, Hiplok DX) is the safest single solution in Berlin. Look for Abus security level 13–15 or ART 3–4 stars. Even better: combine a U-lock with a chain lock — that doubles the break-in time and deters most thieves.
Is €30 enough for a good bicycle lock?
No. Locks under €50 are usually cracked in under a minute in Berlin. Budget at least €80–120 for a decent U-lock. Rule of thumb: invest 10% of the bike's value in the lock — so about €150 for a €1,500 e-bike.
Where are the most bikes stolen in Berlin?
According to police statistics, Friedrichshain, Mitte, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg are the hotspots — especially around stations (Warschauer Straße, Ostkreuz, Alexanderplatz), clubs and universities. Many thefts also happen in courtyards and basements, so a good lock is essential even at home.
Does household contents insurance cover bicycle theft?
Only partially. Standard household insurance (Hausratversicherung) usually covers theft only from locked rooms. For theft on the street you need the add-on "Fahrraddiebstahl" (bicycle theft rider) or a separate bike insurance policy. Important: keep the frame number, proof of purchase and a photo of your lock handy.
What is the point of a coded frame number or GPS tracker?
A coding — carried out by the ADFC (German Cyclists' Federation) Berlin or the Polizei Berlin (Berlin Police) — makes your bike unattractive to fences and helps identify it after recovery. Hidden AirTags or dedicated bike trackers (e.g. PowUnity, Vodafone Curve) help with recovery, but are a tracking tool, not theft prevention.
What to do immediately after your bike is stolen in Berlin?
File an online report straight away at the Internetwache der Polizei Berlin (Berlin Police online station) — have the frame number ready. Then notify your insurer (within 48 hours or you risk losing the payout), post in the Berlin Facebook group "Geklaute Fahrräder Berlin" (Stolen Bikes Berlin) and search Kleinanzeigen listings. Many bikes resurface there within 72 hours.
