Bicycle squeaking — causes, diagnosis and quick fixes

In short: Squeaks almost always come from the brakes (pads, disc contaminated with oil), chain (dry/dirty) or saddle/handlebar (clamp). First locate the cause, then clean or retighten as needed. A brake squeal after rain is usually harmless; otherwise, workshop.

A squeaking bike is annoying — and sometimes a real warning sign. In most cases the cause is harmless and fixed in five minutes. Sometimes, however, the noise signals a safety problem you shouldn't put off. This guide helps you identify the sound and decide: do it yourself or bring it to our workshop in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Attention: metallic scraping when braking?

If your brake scratches or scrapes metallically, the pads are gone — metal rubs directly on the rim or disc. Don't ride any further; bring the bike to us. Come straight to Friesenstraße 24, Mo–Sa 9–21 Uhr.

Noise diagnosis at a glance

Recognise your noise in this table? Then you'll know immediately where to look:

NoiseLikely cause
High-pitched squeal when brakingContaminated or glazed pads, misaligned
Metallic scraping when brakingPads worn out, metal on rim/disc — STOP immediately
Creak when pedallingBottom bracket, crank, pedal or seatpost dry/loose
Click on every revolutionLoose pedals, stiff chain link or misindexed gears
Rubbing while rollingBrake rubbing, mudguard on tyre or a loose spoke
Chain squeakingDry or rusty chain — needs lubrication

Squeaking when braking

This is cause number one — and mostly harmless. The most common reasons:

  • Contaminated pads or rims/discs: oil, grease or chain spray contaminate the braking surface. Clean with brake cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Never use WD-40 or silicone spray anywhere near the brakes.
  • Glazed pads: heat creates a smooth surface. Rough it up with fine sandpaper or bed the pads in fresh.
  • Misaligned pads: on rim brakes, pads should sit with a slight 'toe-in' (1 mm closer at the front than the back). On disc brakes, centre the caliper.
  • Worn pads: once the grooves are no longer visible, they need to go. New pads from us from €15 including fitting.

Creaking or clicking when pedalling

Pedal-synchronous noises are often hard to locate — they can come from many places. The most common suspect is the bottom bracket, but other spots create similar sounds:

  • Bottom bracket: dried out, worn or loose. Often after winter due to road salt. Service from €20, replacement depending on model.
  • Pedals: unscrew with a pedal spanner, grease the thread, screw firmly back in. Takes five minutes.
  • Saddle / seatpost: pull the post out, wipe clean, grease (carbon: use carbon assembly paste) and refit.
  • Chain: lubricate a dry or rusty chain with chain oil — not WD-40.
  • Crank bolts: retighten loose crank bolts with a torque wrench.

When should you go straight to the workshop?

Some noises are a clear stop signal. Bring your bike to the workshop when:

  • The brake squeaks and bites worse than usual
  • It scrapes metallically when braking
  • You feel play in the bottom bracket or headset
  • Noises come from the headset when steering
  • Spokes are visibly loose or the wheel wobbles
  • The noise gets louder under load (uphill)

Frequently asked questions

My bike only squeaks when wet — is that normal?

With damp pads or rims it may squeal briefly and normally disappears after a few braking actions. If the squeal stays permanent, the pads are contaminated or glazed.

Can I clean brakes myself?

Yes — with brake cleaner and a lint-free cloth. IMPORTANT: never spray oil, WD-40 or silicone spray onto brake pads or discs. It ruins braking performance permanently.

Why does my bottom bracket creak in winter?

Road salt and moisture get into the bearing and wash out the grease. In spring a bottom-bracket service with cleaning and re-greasing pays off — from €20 with us.

When is squeaking really dangerous?

When the brake squeaks AND bites worse, when there is metallic scraping, when the noise gets louder when steering or braking, or when there's also play in the bottom bracket — then straight to the workshop.

Does the diagnosis cost anything?

No. A quick diagnosis and noise search are free of charge. You only pay for the repair if anything needs doing — fixed prices agreed up front.

Can I drop in without an appointment?

Yes, mornings between 9 am and 12 pm it usually works without an appointment. Friesenstraße 24, Berlin-Kreuzberg.
