Is the repair still worth it?

The first question: are you attached to the bike?

When someone brings us an older bike, the first thing we ask is whether there is a bond with it — it was grandad's bike, you have been riding it for years, you simply feel comfortable on it. If the answer is yes, then from our point of view a repair is almost always worth it. A bike that fits you and that you feel safe on is hard to replace — even with a newer one.

There is no fixed price limit

We do not say in general terms above which amount a repair stops being worth it. It depends on the bike, on its condition and on what it is worth to you.

One point many people underestimate: it also depends on which components are fitted and whether spare parts for them are still available at all. A lot disappears from the range after a few years and is replaced by newer or different products. A successor part then does not always fit one to one — sometimes more has to be replaced than originally expected, and in rare cases a part is simply no longer available. We check this as part of the diagnosis.

Why a €200 repair is often better than a €200 used bike

The amount below is deliberately just an example, not a price quote. If someone hesitates at a repair costing, say, 200 euros, we like to put the following calculation next to it: for the same amount you can get another bike on classifieds or the second-hand market — but one whose condition you can hardly assess as a layperson. Wear on the chain, cassette, brakes or bearings is not visible from the outside. It happens regularly that several hundred euros more then go into such a supposed bargain. With your own bike, by contrast, you know what you have — and after the repair you also know what was done.
