A wheel that no longer runs true is often first noticed at the brake — it suddenly rubs in one spot even though it is correctly adjusted. The cause is rarely the brake itself but the wheel: it has picked up a buckle and needs truing. Here we explain what is behind it, how to spot it and what the repair costs.
What does "truing a wheel" mean?
A bicycle wheel consists of a hub, spokes and a rim. The spokes hold the rim exactly centred and round through even tension. If one or more spokes lose their tension — through potholes, kerbs or normal wear — the rim no longer runs cleanly: it wobbles slightly sideways or hops up and down as it turns. When truing, the wheel is clamped into a dedicated truing stand and spoke tension is adjusted step by step until rim and wheel run exactly round and centred again.
How do you know your wheel needs truing?
- The brake rubs on one side even though it is correctly adjusted
- The wheel visibly wobbles sideways when you spin it by hand or lift the bike
- A noticeable up-and-down bouncing while riding, especially at higher speeds
- Individual spokes feel clearly looser than the surrounding ones when you tap them
Common causes — especially in Berlin
Cobblestones, as found throughout the Bergmannkiez and large parts of Kreuzberg, as well as kerbs and potholes take a noticeable toll on wheels over time. Even a single hard impact — hitting an edge while swerving in traffic, for example — can be enough to loosen one or more spokes.
Why this is not a typical DIY repair
Unlike a chain replacement, truing needs a truing stand and a trained feel for spoke tension — tighten the wrong spoke too much or too little and the buckle can get worse or the rim can warp further. That is why a trip to the workshop pays off here.

How long does truing a wheel take?
For a normal lateral buckle we usually need 20 to 40 minutes on the truing stand. Wheels with several loose or broken spokes take longer, because spoke tension has to be rebuilt evenly all the way round.
Can a badly buckled wheel still be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
It depends on the rim. As long as the rim itself is straight in material terms and not cracked, dented or worn through at the braking surface, it can usually be trued. If the rim is kinked or cracked, truing is only a temporary fix — in that case rebuilding or replacing the wheel is the honest recommendation. We assess this before we start and tell you which of the two applies.
How often should a wheel be trued?
There is no fixed interval. Truing is done when needed, not on a schedule — typically when the brake starts to rub or the wheel visibly wobbles. On everyday bikes in Berlin, checking spoke tension once a year during the inspection is usually enough.
Do you notice a broken spoke immediately?
Not always. On a wheel with many spokes the remaining ones can carry the load at first, and only a slight wobble or a rattling noise gives it away. However, the wheel does go out of true from that moment on and the neighbouring spokes take more load, so a broken spoke should be replaced promptly rather than ridden on for weeks.
