Rear shifting skips on a bicycle — causes, self-help and workshop
In short: When shifting skips: usually a stretched cable, a bent derailleur hanger or a worn chain/cassette. Re-adjustment fixes 70 % of cases. For a bent hanger or a worn drivetrain: workshop — from about €25.
A skipping chain or hesitating shifting isn't just annoying — under acceleration or on a climb it can get genuinely dangerous. The good news: in most cases the cause is a small thing that can be fixed in 15 minutes of work. Here you'll learn what typically goes wrong, what you can do yourself, and when to come to our workshop in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
Chain skipping under load? Don't keep riding!
If the chain slips under acceleration, you can easily go over the bars. Bring the bike to us — Friesenstraße 24, Mo–Sa 9–21 Uhr. Free diagnosis, fixed prices up front.
The 6 most common causes
From over ten years of workshop experience in the Bergmannkiez — the typical causes, ordered by frequency:
| Cause | Frequency | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Shifting not indexed | very common | Re-adjust shifting — from €15 |
| Cable stretched / corroded | common | Replace cables — from €25 |
| Bent derailleur hanger (after a crash) | common after a crash | Straighten the hanger — from €20 |
| Worn chain | from ~2,000–4,000 km | Replace chain — from €45 |
| Worn cassette | if chain changed too late | Replace chain + cassette together |
| Defective rear derailleur | rare, usually after a crash | Replace derailleur |
Fine-tuning the shifting yourself
If the shifting only slightly hesitates and doesn't skip, the indexing barrel on the shifter or derailleur is usually enough:
- Put the bike on a stand or lift the rear so the back wheel spins freely.
- Shift to a middle gear and watch as you pedal and shift back/forwards.
- Won't shift to a larger cog: turn the indexing barrel a quarter-turn counter-clockwise.
- Won't shift back: turn the barrel a quarter-turn clockwise.
- Shift again and check. Adjust in small steps.
- If after several attempts there's no improvement, the cause is deeper — off to the workshop.
If you don't know the limit screws (H and L on the derailleur), don't touch them. Set wrong, the chain drops into the spokes or over the largest cog — expensive damage.
When should you go to the workshop immediately?
- Chain skips under acceleration or when climbing (fall risk)
- Derailleur sits crooked or rubs on the tyre
- Shifting stopped working after a crash
- Certain gears can no longer be engaged at all
- Grinding noises from the drivetrain under load

Frequently asked questions
Can I adjust the shifting myself?
Fine-tuning with the indexing barrel on the shifter you can do yourself: turn back if the chain won't jump to a larger cog, forward if it won't come back. For a bent derailleur hanger or worn parts, workshop is needed.
How can I tell if my chain is worn?
With a chain checker (Park Tool CC-3.2 or Rohloff Caliber 2). Without a tool: if you can lift the chain off the front chainring by more than a few millimetres, it's done. We measure it for free.
What does a full shifting repair cost?
Pure adjustment from €15, shift cables from €25 including material, chain + cassette + adjustment from about €70–120 depending on model. Fixed price after diagnosis.
How often does shifting need to be adjusted?
With new shift cables once after 200–500 km (settling stretch). After that usually 1× per year at the inspection. More often for frequent riders, e-bike riders and after crashes.
Why does the chain skip only when accelerating?
Classic sign of a worn chain or cassette. Under load the teeth no longer engage properly — dangerous, because you can pitch forward on the pedal stroke. Have it replaced as soon as possible.
Can I come in without an appointment?
Yes, mornings between 9 am and 12 pm usually without an appointment. Friesenstraße 24, Berlin-Kreuzberg.
