Replacing a bicycle chain — when, why and what it costs
In short: Replace the chain at ≥0.75 % wear (chain gauge) — otherwise it eats up the cassette and chainrings with it. A replacement costs from €45 including the chain (chain and cassette together from €70), but saves €100–200 in follow-up damage. Usually due every 3,000–5,000 km.
The bicycle chain is the most underestimated wear part on any bike. Ride it too long and you damage the cassette and chainrings too — and pay significantly more than necessary in the end. A new chain costs €15–35, a cassette €30–80, a chainring another €40–80. Replacing on time saves real money. In this guide we show how to spot wear, how we measure it, and what a chain change costs in our workshop in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Chain skipping under load?
If the chain slips under acceleration, it's usually worn — fall risk. Bring the bike to us: Friesenstraße 24, Mo–Sa 9–21 Uhr. Free measurement, fixed price up front.
How does chain wear work?
Every pedal stroke pulls on the pins — minimally, but millions of times per season. The pins and inner plates get slightly worn out, the chain "stretches". A stretched chain no longer meshes cleanly with the teeth of cassette and chainring. The teeth get sharpened irregularly — result: chain skips, shifting hesitates, drivetrain is done.
Replace the chain in time and you protect the more expensive components. Wait, and you pay three times in the end.
How we measure chain wear
We use a chain wear gauge (Park Tool CC-3.2 or Rohloff Caliber 2). The values:
| Elongation | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| below 0.5 % | Chain still good | Keep riding, maintain regularly |
| 0.5 – 0.75 % | Replace soon | Swap the chain in the coming weeks |
| 0.75 – 1.0 % | Replace immediately | Swap chain, check cassette |
| over 1.0 % | Too late | Replace chain AND cassette together |
Just drop by Friesenstraße 24 — we measure your chain in two minutes and tell you honestly whether a replacement is needed.
How long does a bicycle chain last?
Rules of thumb from our daily workshop experience:
| Bike type | Chain life |
|---|---|
| City bike / commuter | 3,000 – 5,000 km |
| Trekking / commuter | 2,500 – 4,000 km |
| Road bike | 3,000 – 6,000 km |
| E-bike / pedelec | 1,500 – 2,500 km |
| Cargo bike with motor | 1,000 – 2,000 km |
Care makes the difference: an oiled, clean chain lasts twice as long as a neglected one.
Signs of a worn chain
- Chain skips under load or during acceleration
- Shifting hesitates even though just adjusted
- Cracking or grinding noises when pedalling
- Chain can be visibly lifted off the chainring
- Last chain change over 2,000 km / 1 year ago
- Rust or stiff links that won't free up

Frequently asked questions
How often should I have the chain measured?
For regular city bikes every 1,000–1,500 km, for e-bikes every 500–1,000 km. Measurement takes us 2 minutes and is free — just drop by briefly.
What happens if I ride the chain too long?
The stretched chain grinds down the teeth of cassette and chainrings. Instead of €15 for a new chain, you'll pay €70–150 for chain + cassette + possibly chainring.
Which chain is right for my bike?
Depends on the number of speeds: 7/8-speed, 9-speed, 10-speed, 11-speed, 12-speed. We stock the common Shimano, SRAM and KMC chains — including e-bike specific ones with reinforced pins.
How do I care for my chain properly?
Every 150–300 km or after every ride in the rain: clean and lubricate with chain oil — never WD-40. Wipe off excess oil with a rag, otherwise it attracts dirt.
Can I replace the chain myself?
It's possible with a chain tool and a master link. Important: chain must be shortened correctly (respect derailleur capacity) and the master link must match the speed count. When in doubt, better come to us.
What does a complete chain replacement cost?
Chain replacement including chain from €45. Chain + cassette together from €70 (depending on model). Diagnosis and measurement free, fixed price up front.
